Phone Photography: Perfect Your Process.

Axel Alvarado Chávez

"Phone photography is very poor quality," said someone who doesn't know how to use their phone's camera.

The truth is that these days, the cameras we keep in our pockets tend to be pretty good quality . The trick is learning how to use them, becoming familiar with them, and understanding their limitations.

And as with any camera, no matter its caliber, the secret is to practice, practice, and practice .

Don't let it come out blurry.

Focus on Phone Photography

Click on the element you want to focus on , that is, what you want to be in full detail.

If you can't decide on an element, ask yourself , "Who will be the protagonist in this photo?" Click on the answer to that question, and your phone will automatically focus.

If the image is still blurry, check the camera lens. It might have gum stuck to it and needs to be cleaned .

If you're looking for a crazy effect, it's a good idea to use phone lenses or place a prism in front of your camera ; it can create cool distortions in your photo. Let there be no limits to your creativity!

Turn on the light.

After you focused, a little sun appeared next to the screen or the focus point (depending on your phone's operating system). Did you notice it?

This little sun controls the exposure of your photo. Your phone will automatically adjust it, but you can adjust it manually: slide it up and you'll increase the exposure (the image will become brighter); slide it down and the exposure will decrease (the image will become darker).

The trick is to ensure that the photo is in a light that is pleasant for you , balanced, with a wealth of detail in light and shadow.

If you don't like the result, you may not be using the best lighting. Try changing the location, waiting for the sun to move, or using another light source you have on hand.

The cat's hand: let's edit!

Don't let the hashtags #SinFiltro #AsíSalióNiLaEdité intimidate you. The reality is that it's rare to find a photo that isn't edited, so it's best to learn how to do it.

Before moving on to this step, just remember that you should already be happy with your base photo. Editing is like putting the cherry on top, but if the cake already tastes bad, the cherry on top is useless.

The application we recommend to you in Snapseed for being free, for being on iOS and Android and for being complete and easy.

1. Basic Settings:

"What final adjustments do I need to make to my photo?" is the question you should ask yourself before you start. Sometimes you don't even need to change anything at all.

If the answer is brightness, contrast, or saturation , go to "Tools/Image Refine." To give your focus a little boost, go to "Tools/Details." And if you want to adjust the framing of your photo, go to "Tools/Crop."

Simply swipe up and down to change settings, and left and right to modify them.

There are times when I only want to modify highlights and saturation in a specific part of the photo, for these cases I use one of my favorite tools from this app: Selective .

2. Color:

To play around with color, aside from modifying highlights and shadows, you can go to "Tools/Curves." Move the curve points up and down to vary the tones of your photo. This tool may seem difficult if you're unfamiliar with it, but we recommend practicing until you feel comfortable using it.

If you need more basic color adjustments , head to "Tools/White Balance." Here you can adjust the temperature and tint of your photo.

To see a quick before and after , click on the box in the top right corner.

(There are several effects tools in the menu, we won't mention them because we hardly ever use them. The only one that we use sometimes is blur.)

3. Export:
